Why socializing is so important for senior health
Seniors who feel lonely and left out are usually isolated. They are at a much greater risk for depression, dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Other physical effects of loneliness can include a weakened immune system, heart disease and stroke, addiction, and even early mortality.

And speaking of Ashland’s local festivals, you won’t want to miss these opportunities to gather the family together:
- Does your mom or dad have fond memories of going to the fair? If so, they’d probably agree it’s hard to beat. The Ashland County Fair in late September is no exception. From farm animal shows and auctions, tractor pulls, music and entertainment and always popular fair food, it’s a wonderful way to spend a day with family.
- Another option is the Prairie Peddler Festival in Butler during late September and early October. This unique outdoor marketplace in the woods offers great gift shopping among more than 200 arts and crafts vendors. There’s also food, a vintage market, live music, horse-drawn wagon rides and activities for grandkids.
- Of course, the Ashland BalloonFest is not to be missed with colorful hot air balloon launches, tournaments, live music and plenty of great food. And be sure to see the balloon glow, when a hot air balloon is inflated at dusk, but does not take off and fly. As the sky becomes darker, the pilot will ignite the propane burner to make the balloon light up like a huge light bulb or a Chinese lantern. The propane burner is ignited periodically keeping the balloon inflated with hot air. During this time the balloons will sway and light up as they are synchronized to music.
