A brief look at the history of Ashland, Ohio
Ashland is the county seat of Ashland County in north central Ohio. Named “Uniontown” when it was first laid out in 1815, it was renamed Ashland in 1822, and soon became a manufacturing center.
By 1915, Ashland boasted 47 factories producing a wide range of products from pumps to matches to rubber goods and veterinary supplies. Creation of the National Latex Company in 1929 where balloons were made earned Ashland, Ohio, the title of “the balloon capital of the world,” something that is still celebrated today with the town’s annual BalloonFest.
Today, Ashland is home to more than 19,000 people and manufacturing remains the largest economic driver, followed by health care and social assistance, retail trade and educational services. Retaining its small-town mid-American charm, Ashland is a wonderful place to retire and enjoy life at its best.
