Senior Living Lifestyle: A Glimpse Into Daily Activities
Just what do senior living residents do all day? It’s much more than playing bingo or sitting in a rocking chair (though there’s nothing wrong with doing that occasionally!). In today’s senior living communities, residents have lots and lots of choices, whether living in independent living, assisted living, memory care or skilled nursing.
Enhancing the lives of senior living residents
Days in modern senior living communities are rich with possibility for today’s older adults. Staying as active and independent as possible… having a sense of purpose and engagement… feeling connected and supported by others… it all comes from a renewed focus on wellness and happiness.
What a typical day might look like in senior living
Mornings start the day off right
It’s great to wake up knowing so many possibilities await you! Scan today’s activities calendar and decide what sounds good…maybe Wii bowling? Chair yoga? How about joining the group for a shopping trip? Or maybe just a peaceful stroll around the community, greeting friends and catching up on the latest news.
You might stop for a chat in the lobby. Or isn’t it today you get a haircut in the salon? Everything is so convenient for today’s senior living residents—no worries of driving to appointments or staying home to schedule a repair. It’s all handled for you, so you can spend your time as you please.
It’s almost lunchtime already, but first, you want to find out about some of the upcoming events, like the ice cream social, the tailgate for the big game, and also the trip to the county fair. You don’t want to miss a thing. On the way back to your apartment, grab some coffee and check the weather forecast: looks like a perfect afternoon ahead!
After enjoying a quick bite of lunch in the dining room, join friends for a low-key card game. It’s so good to have someone to laugh with, and it feels great to belong to such a caring group. It reminds you of the neighborhood where you grew up. Just knowing there’s someone close by in case you need them helps you relax and feel safe and secure.
Afternoons as busy as you please
You haven’t even scratched the surface of all the things you can do. Like arts and crafts, book discussions., a birthday party and trivial pursuit. There are also religious services for peaceful meditation and reflection. And there’s always your comfortable and welcoming apartment when you’d like some rest.
Evenings you design
Mealtimes are so enjoyable with nutritious, delicious menu options that range from snacks to full meals and familiar favorites always available. It’s comforting to have good friends join you and ask you about your day. And it’s wonderful to not have to do the dishes!
After dinner, you might join friends to watch a movie and enjoy popcorn in the theater. Or entertain your family in your residence. Maybe just spend some time reading or listening to music. It’s all up to you.
And if you have a loved one in skilled nursing or memory care, it’s good to know their days are full as well. Senior living residents in all care options have opportunities for safe socializing, engagement and mental stimulation. Sample activities might be music therapy, movies, spiritual study, games, arts and crafts, pet therapy, singalongs and more. The goal is always to support residents through activities that match their interests and provide moments of enjoyment and laughter, so important for healthy aging.
