7 Things to Look for When Touring an Independent Living Community
Touring independent living can be exciting. You’re checking out a lifestyle that not only offers newfound freedom from everyday worries, but also a ticket to more friendship, spontaneity and overall happiness. Here are some suggestions on what to look for so you can make the right choice.
7 important things to note when touring independent living:
- Do people look happy? It might seem simplistic, but you want to live in an atmosphere that feels friendly and welcoming. How many smiles do you see on faces as you walk around? Is there laughter in the air? Watch how staff and residents interact. Ask about staff turnover and what type of training is provided. Happy staff usually also mean happy residents!
- Is it neat and tidy? You most likely have prided yourself in keeping your home clean and organized over the years, and you want to choose a community that makes cleanliness a priority. While touring independent living, notice if the lobby looks spruced up. Are there messy stacks of magazines or newspapers, or does everything seem to be in place? Do the plants look healthy?
In addition to the interior, take a look at the outside entrance and outdoor spaces. Have they been updated? If being able to get out and about is important to you, take the time to walk around outdoors and see how it all feels.
- What are the activities like? Ask to see a monthly calendar of events and programs to see if anything appeals to you. Find out how many residents participate in events and try to drop in one if possible. If you have a particular interest, ask if residents can suggest new programs or activities. Don’t forget to inquire about special events, holiday celebrations and special group outings.
- Do they offer personalized attention when needed? Touring independent living is an excellent way to get a feel for how residents and staff members interact with one another. You want to live in a setting where residents know that a helping hand is there if needed and that the focus is on keeping each person as healthy and independent as possible.
It’s also a good idea to ask what other levels of care are available should your needs change, so that you can truly relax knowing you can receive the support you need.
- Would you enjoy dining there? A pleasant meal can be satisfying in so many ways: delicious choices, important nutrition, delightful company. Take the time to see where meals are served, and if possible, have at least one meal there. Observe how the servers interact with residents, and whether everyone seems to be enjoying their dining experience. It’s also a good idea to inquire about how any dietary restrictions are handled.
Finally, don’t forget to study a few menus. Today’s independent living communities pride themselves on providing residents and their guests with delicious selections that both entice and satisfy. Taste for yourself!
- Is there a floor plan that would work for you? You want to feel comfortable and at home, so take the time to inquire about residences when touring independent living. Check out a model apartment and note kitchen appliances, bathroom size and safety features, finishes, cabinetry, storage and whatever else matters to you. Also, ask about their move-in assistance and if they can help you plan your new space.
- What is their goal for their residents? Touring independent living gives you the perfect opportunity to step back and ask the big questions. Such as, what are you doing to help your residents live their best life? How do you promote each person’s healthy aging? Does your community have a mission, and if so, can you provide some details?
Remember, you’re on your own mission: to find a place to call home, where each person is supported with care and kindness, where it’s easy to stay connected, and you can truly live your best life.
